At Southway Primary School, Design and Technology is an inspiring, practical and creative subject that encourages children to become innovative thinkers and problem-solvers. Pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to design, make and evaluate products that solve real-life problems and meet specific needs. The curriculum provides a carefully sequenced journey of learning, enabling children to build on previous knowledge and apply their understanding in increasingly challenging contexts.
Through a range of engaging projects, children explore key areas of Design and Technology, including structures, mechanisms, textiles, cooking and nutrition, and electrical systems. They investigate existing products, learn about the work of designers, engineers and craftspeople, and develop practical skills using a variety of tools, materials and techniques.
Our approach places the design process at the heart of learning. Children are encouraged to investigate, plan, design, create and evaluate, reflecting on their work and making improvements along the way. This helps them to develop resilience, creativity and critical thinking, while learning that successful designs often evolve through testing and refinement.
Cooking and nutrition form an important part of the curriculum. Pupils learn about healthy eating, food preparation and food hygiene, helping them to make informed choices and develop valuable life skills that will support their wellbeing in the future.
