RSHE

From September 2026 onwards

RSHE (Relationships, Sex and Health Education)

It is our belief that our pupils should be equipped with the knowledge, attitudes and practical skills live healthy, safe, productive and fulfilled lives, both now and in the future. We believe that children should gradually gain this knowledge through a progressive and spiral curriculum that starts with our youngest children.

At Southway we have chosen to follow a RSHE curriculum called Jigsaw for Y1 to Y6. In the EYFS, PSED is a Prime Area of Learning in which children are supported to manage their emotions and develop a sense of self, along with managing relationships and their personal needs. In Reception, Jigsaw is also used to support PSED.

"Jigsaw 3-11 offers a comprehensive Programme for Primary RSHE including statutory Relationships and Health Education, in a spiral, progressive and fully planned scheme of work, giving children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive relationships with themselves and others.

With strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, Jigsaw 3-11 properly equips schools to deliver engaging and relevant RSHE within a whole-school approach. Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus."

Our staff have been trained to deliver this curriculum through a weekly lesson. Each half term, the focus is the same for the whole school and pupils will reflect on their own thoughts, experiences and emotions.
