welcome to year 5

 Autumn: Travelling Fair

Year 5 came back to school to find that their classrooms and shared area had been taken over by a travelling fair! The vivid colours caused the children to gasp and their excitement grew as they became more aware of what the term held for them. The life of a traveller and the atmosphere created by a fair were going to be the key elements of this term’s learning. This term, the children will have the opportunity to:

  • Design their own computer programme
  • Design and make a working model of a fair ground ride
  • Learn how to be a sign writer

Their Fab Finish will take the form of a travelling fair where their parents will have the opportunity to ‘have-a-go’ at a variety of side show stalls and win a prize.

Spring: Astro Adventures!

Year 5 curiously watched Tim Peake’s journey to the ISS and the world of wonder opened up to them.

Many questions were generated from this experience like:

What do I already know about the Earth and Space? What do we want to find out? Why are planets and stars the shape they are? What is the effect of gravity? Why do we experience day and night? How do the Sun, Earth and Moon move in relation to each other?

How do we observe distant objects? How do telescopes work? Why does light travel in straight lines?

The answers to these will form the basis of the learning journey the children will take.

The children’s iPads (please ensure they are charged and in school every day) will be a valuable tool for research alongside the use of non-fiction books.

Our learning journey will also include:

  • Star gazing from the grounds of the school
  • Research into many aspects of space
  • Researching Tim Peake’s adventures in space
  • An educational visit to Winchester Planetarium

Summer: Robin's Recruits

Year 5 arrived back after the holidays to find CCTV footage of a mysterious man in the wooded area.

After closer inspection of the wooded area an arrow was found attaching a DVD to a tree asking for the children’s help! What did Robin Hood want? How could the children help?

We have begun this term finding out about the medieval period of history and who the Sheriff of Nottingham, Robin Hood and his ‘Merry’ gang are. Much of their learning will be taking place outdoors and appropriate footwear and clothing is essential.

Our learning journey will also include:

  • ·         A visit to the Weald and Downland museum.
  • ·         A visit from a woodsman to teach wood craft and survival skills.
  • ·         Bespoke visits/visitors dependent on the children’s choice of learning focus.
  • ·         Research into the medieval period of history and the vast differences between the rich and poor.

All in all, a very full year for Year 5.
