welcome to year 4

 Autumn Term - Amazon Adventure

Our learning journey for the Autumn term in Year 4 was called ‘Amazon Adventure’. The topic looked at all aspects of the Amazon Rainforest, including plants, animals and its people. We focused closely at the Yanomami tribe and how the people live. Finally we focused on why the Rainforests are at risk and what impact this destruction has on people, plants and animals.

Our main texts were ‘The Great Kapok Tree’ and ‘The Shaman’s Apprentice’ by Lynne Cherry and ‘The Vanishing Rainforest’ by Richard Platt.

On the first day of term we encountered an exciting ‘Rainforest experience’ which led us to begin asking questions about the Rainforest, what it is like for tribal people to live there and the animals that inhabit the Rainforest, our learning journey helped us find the answers. We were also be visited by some rather special Rainforest creatures!

Later in the term, we also visit the newly opened Tropical House at Marwell Zoo.

Spring Term - Mechanical Marvels

This term our topic was all about Mechanical Marvels, looking closely at robots of the past, present and future as well as how technology has changed through the years.

Our main text we focused on, was ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes and as part of our stunning start the children received a special message from a robot via their iPads asking for their help to find robot parts on the beach. After collecting the missing pieces of the Iron Man, the children listened to the first chapter of the text on the beach.

We had new class ‘robo-pets’ called Dash that the children enjoyed programming on their iPads, we also focused on designing, writing and debugging programmes that accomplish specific goals, using sequences, selection and repetition to work with variables and detecting and correcting errors in our programmable robots.  Our science this term included circuits, looking at the difference between a parallel and series circuits and we carried out investigations on conductors and insulators.

In January we also visited the London Science Museum gaining inspiration from many of the wonderful inventions over time and looking at how technology has evolved.

Summer Term – Extreme Earth

This term our topic is all about the extremes of the Earth, looking closely at wild weathers such as hurricanes, floods, storms and natural disasters like volcanic explosions, earthquakes and tsunamis. This term we will be creating digital topic books, using the green screen and various other media finishing with an amalgamation of the children’s multimedia work to share at our Fab Finish.

Our science this term is sound and states of matter, where we will be comparing and grouping materials together (solid, liquid, gas) as well as observing material change when heated or cooled. We also look closely at and identify the part played by evaporation and condensation in the water cycle and associate the rate of evaporation with temperature.

We also look forward to our residential trip to Lodge Hill in June this year where we will be spending time in the outdoors and undertaking several fun activities.
