Physical Education

At Southway Primary School, we recognise the importance of children exercising for a lifetime.  We understand that regular physical activity makes an important contribution in eliminating obesity, alongside a healthy diet.

Our children learn the fundamental motor skills that enable them to develop the competence that creates confidence and successful participation in a wide range of sports. We are very proud of the curriculum that we have delivered which enables our children to progress throughout their time at Southway.

In addition, our PE Curriculum aims to ensure that pupils:

  • Succeed in acquiring the skills, knowledge and understanding to achieve or exceed age-related expectations

  • Engage in the learning of transferable leadership skills across the key stages to lead inter-school competitions and lessons

  • Develop their creativity, decision-making and problem-solving skills

  • Know how to use physical activity to enhance their physical and mental well-being so that being active forms part of their life-long identity

  • Develop their confidence to perform under pressure

  • Increase their self-confidence and their ability to have trust in others

  • Develop their empathy for others, for example their peers with disabilities

  • Understand (and be given the chance to explore) issues relating to body image and body confidence at appropriate stages of their PE experience

Extracurricular activity plays a pivotal role in life at Southway and we are aware our curriculum goes beyond the classroom. We aim to offer a wide variety of experiences and clubs to our children. We have some fantastic links with outside agencies who also offer superb opportunities for our children. At Southway we have a proud history of entering competitions and festivals. Our children compete hard, fairly and with enjoyment.
