Autumn - Wild Woods
To begin the year the children in Year 1 discover a mysterious stranger in the woods. They look for clues to try to work out the stranger's identity. The children find a red cloak and a basket of items. They explore these with their senses which inspire some wonderful senses poetry! The children establish that the stranger is Little Red.
We then visit Seeley Copse woodland where the children discover and learn about native trees and habitats.
After half term, the children return to discover a classroom full of paper aeroplanes. The children find a book where they are involved in solving the mystery of The Great Paper Caper. The children make their own paper planes and finally the topic draws to a close by the children making their own paper.
Spring - Catch that Goat!
In the Spring Term we learn about Africa in the unit ‘Catch that Goat’ based on a key text. The children arrive back after the holidays to an African market in their classroom, filled with spices and unusual fruits and vegetables which awaken their senses!
The children choose an African country to research and become experts. They then create their own non-fiction book.
After half term the learning goes on safari and the children's learning has a focus on African Animals. They learning journey comes to an end with a visit to Marwell Zoo, where the children see real African animals.
Summer - Tales of the Riverbank
During the Summer Term, Year One explore different water ways in a learning journey called ‘Tales of the Riverbank’. The topic begins with a small blue creature called a Bog Baby coming to live in our classroom. The children then learn about the frog life cycle and ponds with a visit to Arundel Wetlands.
After half term we learn about rivers and canals and compare the geographical features of these. The children visit the Chichester Canal with a canal boat ride.
